Holton
Company Website:
Born out of the professional needs of a nineteenth-century musician, the history of the Holton company began in the 1890s with Frank Holton, a professional trombonist performing with the world-famous John Philip Sousa Band. Seeking to supplement his musical income to support his family, Holton initially launched a modest side-business blending and selling specialized trombone slide oil. As the enterprise expanded, he transitioned into repairing and selling secondhand brasses, experiences that soon inspired him to experiment with original instrument designs. In 1898, this iterative craftsmanship culminated in the production of his very first original instrument, a trombone appropriately designated as the "Holton Special".
Holton’s designs garnered immediate acclaim, sparking a period of exponential industrial growth that saw his Chicago-based workshop expand to employ over one hundred craftsmen within a single decade. During this initial era of prosperity, the firm focused strictly on manufacturing high-end, premium instruments tailored for professional orchestral and band musicians. However, adapting to changing market demographics, the company successfully diversified its catalog by 1929 to include affordable, high-quality student models alongside their artist-grade lines. Through strategic resilience and a steadfast reputation for reliable acoustic designs, the company survived the economic challenges of the twentieth century and continues to exist today as a historic brand under the modern Conn-Selmer umbrella.
