Hirsbrunner

Company Website:

In my collection:

The history of Hirsbrunner represents one of the oldest, most uninterrupted dynasties in the global history of musical instrument fabrication. The family's musical legacy began with Christian Hirsbrunner (born 1748), who became the first of his lineage to officially establish a workshop as a dedicated musical instrument maker, specializing primarily in high-quality woodwinds. Following his tenure, his sons successfully sustained the workshop. A fascinating geopolitical turning point occurred during the French Revolutionary Wars when French troops occupied Switzerland from 1798 to 1803. The Hirsbrunner artisans took a profound interest in the advanced brass instruments carried by these foreign military bands, prompting the Swiss workshop to strategically expand their craft and pioneer their very own brasswind production lines.

The family business steadily industrialized over the course of the 19th century. Johann Ulrich 'Hansulrich' Hirsbrunner (1811–1885) established the firm's first full-scale factory in 1847. Generationally, the family expanded their enterprise: in 1870, his son Jakob Hirsbrunner (1836–1900) branched out to open an independent company in Aarau, while another son, Friedrich Hirsbrunner (1841–1927), assumed control of the foundational family workshop. Around 1880, Friedrich began branding the instruments under his own name, Fritz Hirsbrunner. The lineage advanced again in 1900 when his son Arnold Hirsbrunner (1869–1940) joined the executive operations, prompting the workshop to officially append 'Sohn' (Son) to their factory nameplates.

Through centuries of refined heritage and an unyielding commitment to acoustic excellence, Hirsbrunner continues to manufacture world-class musical instruments today [tuba-hirsbrunner.ch]. Operating out of Sumiswald, Switzerland, the historic workshop remains most universally renowned among elite professional brass players for their legendary, industry-standard tubas and euphoniums.
