GLASSA
Instruments in my collection:
The history of GLASSA Instrumentenbau represents an intriguing, boutique chapter in the Bavarian brass-making tradition. Traditional musicological records dictate that the enterprise was officially established in 1904 by Hans Satzinger in the city of Fürth, Bavaria. The workshop remained actively in business until at least the early 1950s, though its commercial focus shifted significantly over the decades. While the firm initially fabricated its own line of brass instruments, its later post-war years were primarily dedicated to high-end repair work and operating as a regional retail dealership
For historians, the exact corporate origins of the company present a compelling genealogical puzzle. Archival listings within the famous 'Weltadressbuch der Musikinstrumentenindustrie' (World Directory of the Musical Instrument Industry) published by Paul de Wit (1925/26 edition) reveal that an independent instrument maker named Emil Glass was registered in Fürth at the exact same street address as GLASSA Instrumentenbau. This geographic intersection supports a highly compelling etymological theory: that Emil Glass and Hans Satzinger were original business partners who deliberately portmanteaued their surnames to coin the brand identity GLASS-SAtzinger.
This hypothesis is further strengthened by recent research into the historical city directories (Adressbücher) of Fürth, which confirm that Emil Glass was officially registered at this exact location from at least 1905 onwards. Intriguingly, however, the name of Hans Satzinger is entirely absent from these local city records. This anomaly introduces a fascinating layer of mystery to the workshop's history, raising questions about the true nature of their partnership and suggesting that Emil Glass may have played a much more dominant, localized role in the foundation and operation of the GLASSA firm than previously documented.
