Conn

The origins of the legendary Conn brand began with a remarkably colorful chapter in American history. Charles Gerard Conn was a Civil War veteran and a passionate amateur cornet player living in Elkhart, Indiana. Following a physical altercation in a local tavern, Conn suffered a severe lip injury that threatened to end his playing days. In a stroke of brilliant backyard engineering, he developed a custom mouthpiece featuring a protective, vulcanized rubber rim, allowing him to continue performing without aggravating his wound. This innovative design quickly caught the attention of fellow brass players, prompting Conn to secure a patent and establish a dedicated manufacturing shop behind his grocery store in 1875.

Through rapid innovation, strategic partnerships, and a relentless focus on high-volume factory precision, this modest enterprise quickly evolved into a manufacturing empire. C.G. Conn Ltd. grew to become the largest manufacturer of band instruments in the world, defining the sound of American jazz, marching, and orchestral music for generations. Following numerous corporate shifts throughout the late 20th century, the historic brand was eventually consolidated with other industry giants, and the famous Conn name continues to endure today as a key premier division within the contemporary Conn-Selmer Group.
