Charles G. Conn was a Civil War veteran and amateur cornet player. When he injured his lip after a bar fight, he invented a rubber rimmed mouthpiece to be able to keep playing without his lip hurting too much. This evolved into the successful well-known business that still exists today, as part of the Conn-Selmer Group.
