Charles Gerard Conn was a Civil War veteran and a passionate amateur cornet player living in Elkhart, Indiana. Following a physical altercation in a local tavern, Conn suffered a severe lip injury that threatened to end his playing days. In a stroke of brilliant backyard engineering, he developed a custom mouthpiece featuring a protective, vulcanized rubber rim, allowing him to continue performing without aggravating his wound. This innovative design quickly caught the attention of fellow brass players, prompting Conn to secure a patent and establish a dedicated manufacturing shop behind his grocery store in 1875.

Through rapid innovation, strategic partnerships, and a relentless focus on high-volume factory precision, this modest enterprise quickly evolved into a manufacturing empire. C.G. Conn Ltd. grew to become the largest manufacturer of band instruments in the world, defining the sound of American jazz, marching, and orchestral music for generations.
