Conn 22B (1952)
This fascinating instrument is a Conn 22B B♭ trumpet manufactured in 1952, bearing serial number 405098. While standard 22B production models from this era feature Conn’s signature decorative bell engravings, this specimen is entirely bare—a highly unusual anomaly. Furthermore, Conn had officially transitioned the 22B line from top-spring to bottom-spring valves around 1930. Yet, this 1952 horn is uniquely equipped with historical top-spring mechanics.
Given that Conn was heavily redesigning the 22B "New York Symphony" during the early 1950s, these structural anomalies strongly suggest that this specific instrument may have served as an transitional factory prototype for the upcoming 22B "Victor" model line. More extensive research on these fascinating design evolutions can be explored through specialized archives like the Conn Loyalist Website.
Beyond its historical and mechanical mysteries, this trumpet holds a deeply personal place in this collection. It crossed my path in 1990, quickly becoming my primary instrument throughout my teenage years. Lovingly maintained and played for decades, this unique piece of Conn history remains in excellent playing condition today.
