Josef Lidl

Company website:

In my collection:

Founded in 1892 by Josef Lídl in the historic city of Brno, Moravia, this prominent manufacturing house initially entered the music trade strictly as a retail company selling instruments. However, driven by a desire for greater quality control and artistic independence, the firm established its own dedicated workshops in 1895 to begin manufacturing original brass instruments. This transition proved highly successful, and by 1904, the manufacturing division had completely eclipsed the retail sector in importance. The instruments bearing the Josef Lídl Brno mark rapidly gained widespread popularity across Eastern Europe, becoming staple choices for orchestral musicians throughout the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Imperial Russia.

The reputation of the workshop peaked in the mid-twentieth century, celebrated for its exceptional valve designs and rich, traditional tonal character. The pinnacle of this artistic achievement came in 1945, when the entire French horn section of the prestigious Czech Philharmonic Orchestra played exclusively on Josef Lídl Brno horns. Despite this artistic zenith, the post-war geopolitical landscape brought swift changes. Production slowed significantly in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War, and in 1948, the company was seized and nationalized under the state-sanctioned Amati cooperative during the restructuring of the regional industry.

The family lineage experienced a historic revival following the fall of the Iron Curtain, when ownership of the firm was officially returned to the original Lídl family in 1989. The company successfully re-established its independent identity on the global market until 2017, when it was acquired by the Arnold Stölzel GmbH group. Today, the historic Josef Lídl brand remains highly active, preserving its centuries-old reputation for quality brass manufacturing while operating from its modern production base in Hradec Králové.
