Rossmeisl B♭/A (±1922)
About the maker:
This B♭ trumpet, equipped with a quick-change rotary switch to transition seamlessly into the key of A, stands as a compelling testament to the hybrid manufacturing traditions of the early twentieth century. Produced by Rossmeisl in Tilburg, the instrument physically embodies the migration of Bohemian craftsmanship into the Dutch musical landscape.
This specific model features a dull nickel-silver finish, a material favored for its durability and brilliant tonal qualities, though the passage of time has left its mark on the brass. A visible dent is located in the bell bow, accompanied by a structural crease in the flare of the bell. Most notably, the first valve slide is currently frozen in place and suffers from a significant hole, requiring delicate repair work to return the slide to full functionality.
Despite these structural imperfections, preliminary cleaning has yielded highly encouraging acoustic results. The instrument plays remarkably well, demonstrating the robust valve work and precise tapering characteristic of the makers' workshops. Mechanically, the inclusion of the quick-change switch highlights a period of orchestral transition, allowing players to adapt to shifting repertoire requirements without switching instruments. The trumpet is tuned to a traditional High Pitch standard, firmly anchoring its utility and production in an era before the universal international adoption of A=440 Hz, making it an important historical milestone within the collection.
