Hawkes & Son

The foundational history of Hawkes & Son represents a central pillar of the British brass band movement and military music industry. The enterprise was originally established in London in 1865 by William Henry Hawkes, who launched the firm under the name Hawkes & Co. as a dedicated sheet music publishing venture. As the business achieved substantial commercial success, Hawkes strategically diversified his operations by expanding into the manufacturing sector, fabricating high-quality woodwind and brass instruments to supply the rapidly growing global market.

In 1889, following a generational transition within the family leadership, the enterprise was officially renamed Hawkes & Son. Operating from their famous Denman Street workshop, the firm became world-renowned for their premium brasses, particularly their 'Professor' and 'Clippertone' models. In 1930, to navigate the severe economic challenges of the Great Depression, the company executed a historic merger with their fiercest London-based manufacturing and publishing rival, Boosey & Co., to form the corporate empire Boosey & Hawkes. While the brand name remains highly influential in contemporary music, its current iteration operates solely as a premier music publisher. Following a major corporate restructuring in 2003, the company officially divested and sold off its entire musical instrument manufacturing division, marking the end of Hawkes' historic lineage of instrument fabrication.
