Unkown Maker

This B♭ 9-key Ophicleide of unknown origin holds a special place in the collection as the very first ophicleide I ever acquired. The instrument is completely devoid of manufacturer engravings or brand marks. The only clue left behind is the assembly number 218, stamped onto the rod of the first key. While the ophicleide was available from its invention in 1817 until as late as 1912—famously appearing in catalogs like Couesnon—the construction techniques of this specific specimen strongly suggest an earlier rather than a later production date.

When this horn first arrived, it required immediate attention: the bocal was damaged and the pads were completely worn out. Following a professional restoration to rebuild the bocal and replace the pads, the instrument was successfully brought back to life and is fully playable once again.
