F. Besson Paris (1905)
About the maker:
F. Besson Paris Cornet in B♭/A
Archived Collection Piece: This instrument is no longer held in the physical collection.
This B♭/A cornet, manufactured by the celebrated French firm F. Besson in Paris, was produced between 1901 and 1905, as verified by its serial number 68265. A defining feature of this specific model is the inclusion of an extra rotary quick-change switch designed to transition the instrument instantly between the keys of B♭ and A. These specialized mechanical extensions and extra "bits and pieces" have always held a special appeal for me, representing the peak of early twentieth-century orchestral innovation.
The instrument survived in good, fully playable condition, showcasing the precise valve work and characteristic French tonal clarity that made the Besson workshop famous worldwide. However, as can sometimes happen in the world of collecting, I simply did not feel a strong personal or musical connection with this cornet over time. Recognizing this, I ultimately decided it should move on to a new home where it could be fully appreciated, and I subsequently sold it to a fellow enthusiast.
