Couesnon (1927)

Couesnon "Monopole" Piston French Horn
Archived Collection Piece: This instrument is no longer held in the physical collection.

This French horn is a premium "Monopole" model manufactured by the prominent French firm Couesnon in 1927. Built with a traditional piston-valve system, this versatile instrument came equipped with its original exchangeable crooks for both the keys of F and E♭, allowing the player to easily adapt to different orchestral and wind band repertoires. Structurally, the horn has survived in good condition, bearing only a few minor dents, with the most notable compression located at the throat of the bell flare.

Acoustically, the instrument remains highly responsive and plays remarkably well, showcasing the refined valve action and clear tonal focus that made the Monopole line Couesnon's flagship professional offering. Because I found that I was not using this historic horn very much in my daily playing schedule, I ultimately decided to sell it to another musician who would put its excellent playability to more frequent use, though its superb craftsmanship remains documented here.
