Couesnon (1934)
About the maker:
Hear me play this instrument on
Manufactured in 1934, this B♭ flugelhorn is another beautiful example of Couesnon’s legendary craftsmanship. While it does not belong to the coveted "Monopole" line—often considered the holy grail for flugelhorn players—this standard-tier model remains a very fine and highly capable instrument.
Unlike many instruments from the 1930s that suffered from heavy wear, this flugelhorn has survived in remarkably good shape. When it first arrived, decades of inactivity had left the pistons slightly frozen and the first and third valve slides completely stuck.
After careful cleaning, safely pulling the frozen slides, and oiling the valves, the instrument was fully revived. Today, it plays quite nicely, delivering the characteristically warm and mellow tone that made French flugelhorns famous worldwide.
