Couesnon (1897)
About the maker:
Manufactured in 1897 by the prominent French workshop Couesnon & Cie., this instrument presents a fascinating visual contradiction. While the vast majority of the brass body and mechanics look as pristine as the day they left the factory, a couple of glaring defects remain completely untouched
The body of the cornet shines with an intense, mirror-like clarity, and even the internal pistons look entirely brand new. This flawless finish strongly suggests that a previous owner had the entire instrument professionally and chemically cleaned to strip away over a century of tarnish.
Curiously, whoever funded this deep chemical restoration chose to leave two major structural issues completely ignored. The brass bell is visibly warped and distorted, and the tiny spring powering the water-key remains broken. Why a collector or musician would pay to make the instrument look (partly) brand new, yet leave it structurally unplayable, remains an intriguing historical mystery.
