Bruno "Perfection" (1918)

About the maker:

Bearing the serial number 38605, this cornet was marketed and distributed by the prominent New York wholesaler C. Bruno & Son. Engraved on the bell as their premium "Perfection" model, the horn is a classic example of an American stencil instrument. While it carries the dealer's New York imprint, the build details—most notably the top-spring slit barrel valves and signature half-moon-shaped valve guides—unmistakably reveal that the Buescher Band Instrument Company of Elkhart, Indiana, was the true manufacturer. This exact design proved so successful for Buescher that they later reused it for their subsidiary, the Elkhart Band Instrument Company, which is why this 1918 horn shares identical mechanical features with later Elkhart models.

Visually, the cornet features an extra loop of tubing where the main pipe leaves the valve block and curves toward the bell. This unique extra bend was highly popular on American-designed cornets throughout the early 1900s. While wrapped like a traditional cornet, it sits in an interesting acoustic and structural grey area. The mouthpiece receiver features an unusual, transitional size that serves as a bit of a missing link between two brass families: it is too large to take a standard cornet mouthpiece shank, yet too small to receive a modern trumpet shank.

Decades of heavy use have naturally left their mark on the brass. A severe air leak in the main tuning slide initially made the cornet unplayable, requiring a localized drop of solder to seal the fracture and get the instrument working again. Furthermore, time has worn down the internal tolerances of the pistons, resulting in poor valve compression. While it might not be a top performer by modern standards, this old cornet is still fully playable today if you use a heavy-viscosity valve oil to temporarily seal those internal gaps.
