Boosey & Co. "Orchestral Model" (1905)
About the maker:
Manufactured around 1905, this "Orchestral Model" cornet by the renowned British maker Boosey & Co. bears the serial number 70652 on its bell. This instrument is a fascinating time capsule from an era when international musical pitch standards were actively changing.
Although originally built to play in the higher orchestral pitch standard of its day ("High Pitch B♭"), by inserting a longer tuning bit into the leadpipe, I could successfully lower the overall tone to line up with our "Modern Pitch B♭."
The individual valve slides feature precise, factory-stamped notches to help the player quickly adjust the tubing lengths. While these notches could be for modern tuning, they were likely intended to drop the instrument into "High Pitch A"—a historic key that sounds remarkably close to our modern B-flat.
While all of its slides and valves still move smoothly despite a few minor dents and bends, the cornet is currently unplayable due to misaligned water-keys that leak air pressure.
