Bernhard Kohl

Operating during a period of profound political and economic transition in twentieth-century Germany, Bernhard Kohl (1882–1960) maintained a dedicated career as an independent manufacturer of brass instruments. Based in the historic musical instrument-making heartland of Saxony, Kohl honed his craft through decades of shifting market demands, developing a reputation for solid, dependable workmanship. As the regional economy reshaped itself during the turbulent 1940s, Kohl adapted to the changing industrial landscape by joining MIGMA (Musikinstrumenten-Handwerker-Genossenschaft Markneukirchen), a prominent craftsmen's cooperative formed to protect, market, and distribute the work of independent makers in the Markneukirchen area.

This cooperative framework allowed Kohl’s workshop to sustain its output and preserve its traditional manufacturing methods through the early post-war years. In 1953, a significant transition occurred within the family workshop when Kohl handed over the daily operations of the company to his son-in-law, Walter Fischer. Fischer officially assumed full control, continuing the workshop's production under his own name while upholding the core standards of quality and design established by his father-in-law, ensuring that the legacy of Kohl's craftsmanship endured for another generation.
