Josef Glassl

Hear me play this instrument on

About the maker:

This is a Flugelhorn in C (High Pitch, so close to modern C#) made by Josef Glassl from Graslitz, between 1938 - 1945.

On pictures I saw it looked good, but when I went to pick it up I saw many damages but as the seller was very friendly and had an interesting story to tell, I didn't want to opt out so I did take it. I decided to turn it into a project to see if I could make it playable, and it turns out I was able to...somewhat; it now does play and not even too bad.

The text on the bell garland is not very clear and does not show up on photographs, but it reads: "Josef Glassl Instr. Erzeugung Graslitz Sudetengau". The Sudetengau (officially Reichsgau Sudetenland) was an administrative unit of Nazi Germany between 1939 and 1945, formed after the annexation of the Sudetenland territories in Czechoslovakia, which included Graslitz. As this is the name mentioned on the bell, the instrument must be from this period. Most likely from the earlier years, because in WW2 the instrument industry was halted in favour of the military industry.
