Assocation Générale "French Wrap" (1880's)
About the maker:
Hear me play this instrument on
Manufactured by the French artisan collective Association Générale, this elegant cornet likely dates back to the early 1880s. It features a highly distinctive "French Wrap" configuration, where the brass tubing is coiled into a graceful loop that is uniquely characteristic of late-19th-century French design.
This cornet arrived at my house inside its original, heavily worn "coffin-style" wooden case, complete with a treasure trove of original tuning bits and crooks used by the musician to change keys before modern valve setups became standardized.
The 3rd valve on this cornet is a completely different size and design than the first two. This suggests it is a historic replacement, swapped in by a practical craftsman to keep the horn working.
The bell-bow features a noticeable structural crack. However, a simple layer of tape seals the air leak, keeping this 140-year-old instrument fully playable today.
